Widgets

Hey everyone,

Just a little note. I was trying to add widgets to my page, and came up with some mysterious occurences. So, I thought I might give a quick mention of things that might be helpful in adding widgets to your personal profile pages.

To begin, and foremost, check this site out: http://www.yourminis.com/
So once you are there, you can get a feel of this whole widgets thing.

First, if you are not web savvy or do not care to be, then this might help, and I will try to make it light and easy, like greasy.

Second, a lot of the widgets declare themselves as new paragraphs (which means that they will stack on top of each other, and not side to side), so it might be wise, or necessary, to use a different tag instead. Your widgets will work just fine without my suggestions, but if you want them to display systematically or aesthetically, then the further instructions might be for you.

So, in other words, if your embed code (the code that starts with <embed>) begins with something like <p> or <p />, even <div> or similar to that, then use this:

<div style='margin:0; padding:0; float:left;'>

in place of the <p> or <p /> or <div> and stuff.

Third, after that, there are a few parameters that need to be changed if you want them to be beautiful-crazy-cool. There is a width and a height tag. The height and width tag may show several times, typically just once or twice, but you will need to change both of these values to be consistent to what you set them for. I think a general rule of thumb for most widgets are going to be 270px wide (moreover, if they are smallish, and you want two on a "row"). So these are some general settings that may be helpful.

Note: I noticed, after pasting and then saving my embed code, and after you refresh the page, an additional instance of the width and height values appear for some of the widgets. So, once you save your changes, refresh the page, and then go back into your "Edit Widgets" mode using the "Edit" button to make some necessary changes, the code is different. I think it needs to get the feed first, I dunno, but you should change these width and height values accordingly after this. Also, if you have multiple widgets on your page, you cannot have any line returns between each widgets code. If you do, they will not line up properly.

Moving on...

Next, there are widgets that are too large (width wise), or need to display on a full "row". So, again, the same principle, but with different code. Check it out:

<div style='margin-left:auto; margin-right:auto; padding:0;'>

Then, of course, adjust the width, or just a general rule of thumb: 540px. My suggestion, aesthetically wise. Remember, the width and height tag may occur multiple times.

As always, make sure when you are using these tags such as <p> or <div>, to make sure that they are properly closed. Like, with a </p> or a </div> tag.

FYI, the height does not generally matter, you might want to keep it consistent for all your widgets, tho. The width is the key, and/or concern.

Keep in mind, these general rules may vary pixel to pixel AND from theme to theme, since your own personal theme may employ different HTML and/or CSS parameters for display reasons. Don't be intimidated, it is easy, just maybe a little trial and error 'til it works out.

Finally, here is an example of what your code should look similar to:

<div style='margin:0; padding:0; float:left;'><embed pluginspage="http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer" src="http://www.yourminis.com/Dir/GetContainer.api?uri=yourminis/yourminis/mini:calendar" wmode="transparent" width="270" height="219" flashvars="iCalUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fhhqfans%2Ening%2Ecom%2Fprofile%2FFbomb&height= 219&width= 270&xheight= 219&xwidth= 270&dayoffset=0&uri=yourminis%2Fyourminis%2Fmini%3Acalendar&swfurl=%2Fwidget%5Fcalendar%2Eswf&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always"></embed></div>

Hope this helps,
